Lilith
Just mentioning her name can be controversial as much as fascinating, admired for many and rejected as well, from ancient-biblical times she is a demoness, a succubus,a nocturnal spirit from evil or a seductress, her story or her myth has survived until the present…
It has been said that Lilith could be the first Vampire…
Vampires are nocturnal creatures, supernatural beings that consume the blood or flesh of the living and they appear in tales or stories of many ancient cultures/civilizations,for example:
The Persians were one of the first civilizations to have tales of blood-drinking demons, these blood drinking demons were depicted on pottery and other kind of art.
The Ancient Indian goddess Kali, depicted with fangs and wearing a garland of corpses.
The ancient Greek mythology, Lamia talks about a beautiful queen of Libya who became a child-eating daemon and the tradition referred to many lamiae, these are folkloric monsters similar to vampires and succubi that seduce young men and feed on their blood,it is also believed that in ancient times celebrant monks attempted to protect themselves while sleeping with their hands over their genitals, clutching a crucifix so Lilith could not seduce them in their dreams.
The legend about Lilith is originated from Jewish folklore but descriptions of her appear in Iranian, Babylonian, Mexican, Greek, Arab, English, German, Oriental and Native American legends. in the same way she has sometimes been associated the legendary and mythological characters such as the Queen of Sheba Hecate,Persephone and Helen of Troy.
But the most precise or famous legend/myth about her is the one about:
Lilith supposedly was Adam’s first wife and she refused to lie beneath Adam at the moment of making love…Lilith said to Adam: ‘I will not lie below,’ and Adam said, ‘I will not lie beneath you, but only on top. For you are fit only to be in the bottom position, while I am to be the superior one.’ Lilith answered rejecting male dominance: ‘We are equal to each other…as we were both created from the earth.’
After this,Lilith flew away…
Tales, stories and myths, you the reader are the one who will decide what is better, the way you see Lilith, the fact is that she has been an inspiration for authors and artists since ancient times and her story continues inspiring artists nowadays.
